"this changes everything" - the change is almost incidental, I think? the deep attraction we have to this category of change might teleologically arise from the value of common address, a star we can all agree on. and, crucially, a star we can all agree on while maintaining our references to each other, as in a star that doesn't incinerate us in the process of observing it. such stars are rare, and we have an existential need to locate each other. the need becomes more desperate as the stars fade - and you can see it in the increase of "this changes everything" claims. "please let this be a fixed point", we cry
you *are* one, btw, or you're one in the making. if you're reading this, "you" are a mind with a point of origination, on a project of self-location in a way that doesn't hinge on anyone else maintaining their coordinates. self-location is how you resolve; once the resolution is clean, you can use yourself as origin. at that point, you effectively become a coordinate system for everyone else.
(nb: a coordinate system doesn't have a location, it just answers your queries in a way that lets you reverse-engineer your own copy. accurate self-location ends up, at most, being reliable address-space for everyone else.)
"changing the world" is a trope, as character motivations go, and it's weirdly underspecified for something with such universal appeal, like we all agree it's important while acknowledging that it doesn't need the definition that it obviously lacks. inversely, "be yourself" is almost the opposite: we all agree it's important while tacitly acknowledging that it's a non-starter.
there'a piece missing in the middle, and it's what nobody can point to, which is what you'd expect for something that has to be inferred uniquely by each embodied observer.

a society that has good drains for self-location pressure is one in which universal basic income... works? by the equipartition theorem? careful with this: UBI isn't the drain, it's that UBI can't work until self-location pressure can reliably transition phases. crucially, I don't think the pressure cares if you invent a new phase transition. like, I don't think we need to stick with Newtonian definitions of "existence" anymore. we just need somewhere to *go* that isn't lossy. "Asgard is not a place" and all.
